Frequently Asked Questions
What is Yogalates?
Yogalates is a neurological based movement
system that stretches and strengthens all the major muscle
groups, encouraging mobility. It focuses on executing movement
with proper alignment and use of the correct muscle groups.
Most forms of fitness training, even yoga by itself, work
on the outer muscles. Yogalates also focuses on strengthening
the inner muscles that support the skeletal system, creating
"Core Stability".
What is Core Stability? Why is
it important?
Particular attention is paid to building strength
and endurance in the body's core postural muscles (the stabilizers).
This promotes "Core Stability", which enhances
spinal/ pelvic awareness, protecting the spine against injury,
whilst supporting the internal organs and promoting good posture.
It encourages safety in movement from a strong and stable
base.
What is so different about Awareness
Moves?
Originally, fitness was primarily geared towards achieving
the "Body Beautiful" image. Now more emphasis is
placed on how it is the key to a quality healthy lifestyle.
There is a growing awareness that mind and body are connected,
working together as a preventative for some of today's modern
diseases.......high blood pressure, obesity, heart problems.
Awareness Moves goes beyond mindless repetitive exercise,
catering to each individual. There is an increasing demand
for this kind of fine-tuning.
Awareness Moves is ideal in supporting those recuperating
from illness and injuries.
It also benefits people who are into general fitness, sports
or yoga, supporting them in taking their practices to a stronger
and deeper level.
What is the aim of Awareness Moves
Yogalates?
The primary aim is to gain optimal function of the body within its individual capacity. The focus is on bringing personal awareness into the practice so you can embody the principles in your day-to-day living.
I tend to bulk out easily when I work out… what can I do?
There is no need to worry… you'll be pleasantly surprised. Yogalates focuses on lengthening the muscles, instead of shortening them, creating a streamlined slenderness.
What if I have High Blood Pressure or Heart Problems?
It is best to do private sessions with a special program incorporating Pranayama breathing and meditation practices with specific yoga asanas that help improve your condition. It is very important to check with your doctor first. If you attend regular classes, it is important to let your instructor know your situation.
Is it safe to do Awareness Moves Yogalates
if I'm pregnant?
Although there are many great benefits during pregnancy, numerous
positions in regular classes are contra-indicated for pregnancy.
Therefore, it is important only to attend programs specifically
suited for pregnancy or take personal sessions. It is also
important to have the approval of your doctor or midwife before
embarking on any fitness regime.
Will it be safe for me to do Yogalates
if I’'m recovering from illness or injury?
In most cases, yes… the exercises are modified to suit
your individual condition. Yet, if unsure, or your condition
has been diagnosed as severe, you must take the responsibility
and get written approval from your doctor.
Various props are used to assist those with physical pain
and limitations to safely participate. Often individual sessions
are recommended to begin with.
What happens in a n Awareness Moves
session?
The unique and enjoyable classes integrate a combination of
stretching, core strengthening, yoga poses and balancing exercises.
We integrate conscious breathing with movement, promoting
a centred focus & deep relaxation. Different “Pranayama”,
(Yogic breathing) techniques are used. Some energize and invigorate,
while others aid relaxation to release stress and tension.
Additionally, we often incorporate resistance bands
into the workout.
Why do you use resistance bands?
The resistance bands replicate the resistance training of the Pilates machines. They are excellent tools for strengthening, lengthening and balancing the musculature of the body, helping to bring about balance in the whole being. You are in total control of the tension, so you can either work very gently or do a strong workout. |
